India's capital Rises to Toxic Haze Post Diwali

On Tuesday morning citizens of the world's most polluted city encountered breathing dangerously toxic air that was classified as the "alarming" range.

Record-Breaking Pollution Levels

Several parts of the capital recorded an pollution measurement above 500, which represents a tenfold increase over the healthy limit set by the WHO.

Certain monitoring stations, levels of dangerous airborne particles hit highs of 1,800, equating to 15 to 20 times higher than safe standards.

Pyrotechnics Restrictions and New Developments

For the past four years, officials had maintained a comprehensive restriction on the sale and use of fireworks during celebrations due to their substantial impact to the hazardous smog that blankets the city as colder weather sets in.

However earlier this year, the recently formed regional administration appealed to the judicial authority to seek a relaxation of the prohibition.

The suggestion was allowing "green crackers" โ€“ previously doubted by conservation groups as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions โ€“ as a middle ground between "heritage and public health".

Legal Ruling and Enforcement

Despite concerns of medical and ecological advocates, judicial authorities complied with the request, specifying that environmentally conscious fireworks could be ignited during designated hours throughout the celebrations.

On Monday night, there was widespread flouting of the regulated periods across the capital, with insufficient enforcement regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the supposedly greener version.

Several air quality sensors throughout Delhi registered air quality reaching highest levels around late evening to some of the worst readings seen during celebrations in at least the past three years.

Cross-Border Implications

Extensive ignition of fireworks during Diwali also triggered a blame game with bordering the neighboring country, with officials in Pakistan's Punjab province partly blaming declining air quality in the city of Lahore on hazardous particles originating in neighboring India following the events.

Persistent Pollution Crisis

Alarmingly severe readings of atmospheric toxins in Delhi have continued as a significant challenge for more than 15 years, with the condition showing no improvement.

Near Diwali, the amount of hazardous airborne contaminants in the atmosphere has been documented to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the most severe levels ever recorded in China's capital, which was once regarded as the globally most contaminated city.

Diverse Contamination Sources

This crisis in the city is attributed to a convergence of multiple factors including heavy vehicle emissions, airborne particles, development work, rubbish burning and smoke from crop residue ignition in nearby areas of farming communities.

Throughout these areas, farmers regularly set their fields on fire to expedite field preparation, generating dangerous haze that becomes contained over the capital as cooler air descends.

Medical and Financial Impact

Public health and economic impact on the approximately 33 million residents living in the Delhi area is enormous, according to numerous research.

This pollution causes increased incidence of nervous system, cardiovascular and lung conditions, and can result in cancer.

Environmental contamination is calculated to be causing 10,000 premature mortalities per year in Delhi.
