The artist has donated the full amount of his £25k award cash to the MVT, which functions to protect the United Kingdom's grassroots concert spaces.

He was presented with the award on 16 October as his latest record People Watching was named the best record of the past year.

The musician has opted to donate the funds to the trust, in appreciation of the vital role local spots fulfilled in his beginning days.

"I couldn't be pursuing this success if it hadn't been for all the gigs I played around the region, and elsewhere, when I was beginning," said Sam Fender. "These spaces are iconic, but they are in difficulty."

From early 2023 onward, at least 150 of these venues have ceased operations – about 16% of the whole industry in the UK.

Recently, well-known musicians like Pulp, the group Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all aided the MVT in its attempts to support the industry, by applying a minor surcharge to their ticket prices, which benefits independent venues.

Sam Fender also took part, raising more than £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to help thirty-eight grassroots venues across the UK.

The donation helped venues that were dealing with imminent closure due to challenges arising from floods, blazes and personal losses, as well as permit problems, conflicts and noise complaints.

Some locations received financial assistance in improving amenities and technical equipment that helped performers and audiences.

"The concept that funds from performances in major spaces helps the independent spots, where it begins for performers like me, is just sensible," Fender has commented.

They are one of the many acts who contributed their award winnings to non-profits

He is not the first artist to contribute his Mercury Prize winnings to good deeds.

Back when they received the award in the year 1996 for their album the album, vocalist Jarvis Cocker announced that the act would contribute their prize money to the non-profit War Child.

In 2002, artist she divided her award across a few good causes, such as the children's charity and a Sickle Cell charity.

"I also donated a thousand pounds to my local community centre, to their gymnastics program, because I trained in gymnastics when I was a child and they required better apparatus," Ms Dynamite shared with a publication.

Previously, they contributed their funds to the youth organization that supported their act, as well as other independent music bodies.

And winners that year they contributed their prize to a MS organization after a friend was identified with the condition.

"Receiving the award was sufficient," said vocalist Heather Small. "The prize was the cherry on top but we didn't require the cherry, because we had the honor. So our victory affected somebody else's life."

Recently, the MVT shared it had protected two local spots in that region, by bringing them into local control.

The first in that area and The Croft in that location were acquired under the Own Our Venues initiative, which is supported by the arts council and music fans who buy "stakes" in the buildings.
