Thousands Participate in Pro-Palestine Demonstrations as Organisers Promise to Persist in Activism

Tens of thousands have rallied throughout the country at pro-Palestinian protests, with coordinators pledging to keep demonstrating after a peace arrangement brokered by the former US president in Gaza initially appeared to be holding.

Sydney Demonstration Draws Large Crowd

In Sydney, the Palestine Action Group said 30,000 people had demonstrated from Hyde Park to Belmore Park in the downtown area after a scheduled protest to the famous building was banned by the state judicial body recently.

NSW police approximated a crowd of 8,000 participated in the local rally, with a spokesperson reporting there had been "minimal disturbances".

Nationwide Demonstrations Mark Anniversary

Rallies were also organized in Melbourne, Queensland's capital and west coast metropolis on the weekend to commemorate two years of killing in Gaza after Hamas attacks on October 7th, 2023 caused significant casualties in the neighboring country.

"In terms of the movement, we'll definitely persist to demonstrate for Palestinian freedom... for self-determination in Gaza, for humanitarian assistance to enter and for Palestinians to be able to rebuild Gaza," stated one organiser.

Varied Responses to Truce Arrangement

Many protesters shared confidence that the ceasefire would lead to lasting peace. Several expressed concerns of the former president's role and encouraged participants to maintain pressure on the national authorities to impose restrictions and halt weapons commerce.

A participant, a Australian of Palestinian descent residing in the city, expressed he hoped the arrangement could permit him to assist his senior relative, who is still in Gaza without access to medical care, to the country, and to locate and inter his sibling, his wife and their kids, who have been lost contact in 2023.

Local Jewish Population Holds Commemoration

In another development, thousands participated in a Jewish community commemoration on that night in the city's eastern areas to mark the second anniversary of the October attacks. Geoffrey Majzner, the brother of Galit Carbone, an national who was deceased in the incident, was planned to address.

There were prayers for the imminent repatriation of 20 remaining hostages in the territory and those killed on 7 October. The Israeli ambassador, Amir Maimon, recognized the strength of victims. The audience expressed disapproval when he spoke about the Australian prime minister and the top diplomat.

Maritime Protesters Share Experiences

The city's demonstration earlier included testimonies including four Australians released from Israeli detention after the stopping of the protest boats this month.

Surya McEwen, his arm in a sling after it was reportedly injured in an Israeli prison, told that insufficient information was available about the ceasefire deal. Global humanitarian groups, including humanitarian bodies, were preparing to enter Gaza.

"While circumstances persist where there's a brutal and illegal blockade on the region," said the activist, flotilla activists would continue to try to deliver aid by sea.

A different activist, who arrived home on recently, gave an moving testimony describing his detention with dozens of fellow detainees in a detention facility.

Political Statements

The NSW Greens MP Jenny Leong addressed participants: "It's unacceptable to permit a situation where American leadership shapes the future of the Palestinian people to be the nature of existence we tolerate."

Another organiser who filed the initial request to demonstrate at the famous location maintained that the participants could have peacefully gone to the famous harbourside venue. The NSW police assistant commissioner had previously stated the judicial body that the plan had "disaster written all over it".

The organiser stated at the event: "On each occasion the authorities try to restrict our protests or legal challenges, it raises public awareness... to the importance of gathering and oppose such actions."
